Del Papa to tour Family Support Council Monday

by Sheila Gardner

Attorney General Frankie Sue Del Papa will tour the Family Support Council office Monday to lend her support to the Douglas facility’s efforts to establish a shelter for women victims of domestic violence and their children.

Del Papa is scheduled to speak at an 11 a.m. news conference at the Family Support Council.

“She’s been doing a tour of rural Nevada domestic violence facilities and will be visiting ours,” said Cheri Warrell, deputy director of the Family Support Council.

Funding for some domestic violence programs is channeled through Del Papa’s office, Warrell said. This will mark the attorney general’s first visit to the Douglas County facility.

Warrell said the Family Support Council has formed a committee including members of the board of directors, staff, and others interested in establishing a shelter in Carson Valley. Members of Soroptimist International of Carson Valley are also on the shelter committee.

“The committee is exploring the issue, interviewing people who have shelters in their communities, seeing what types of funding are available and looking into costs. We’re doing lots of research as far as definite plans,” Warrell said.

“We have emergency facilities in Carson Valley, but they are really not very adequate and are extremely temporary,” Warrell said.

She said another option is for the women and their children to go to a shelter in Carson City.

“They are usually full and it’s disruptive to someone’s life if they work here and their children go to school here. Consequently, some women choose not to go. Hopefully, if we have a shelter here, it will be used by someone in that situation,” Warrell said.

The news conference is open to the public. The Family Support Council is located at 1255 Waterloo Lane, Suite A, Gardnerville, across from Lampe Park.
