Dec. 2 parade of lights changes route
The 5th annual Parade of Lights will be traveling a different route on Dec. 2.
Starting at Lampe Park on Waterloo Lane in Gardnerville, the lighted holiday parade will travel down Highway 395 through Gardnerville, turning left on Esmeralda and ending at the Minden Park.,
This year’s parade theme is “Winter Wonder Lights,” and entries are encouraged to light their floats for the nighttime parade sponsored by the Carson Valley Chamber of Commerce and Visitors Authority.
Parade chairperson and chamber ambassador Sharon Grecian said parade organizers hope the route change doesn’t dampen the holiday spirits of residents on the old route. Previously, the parade wound its way from the Douglas County Senior Center along Douglas Avenue and Wildrose Drive to Minden Park.
“We had to move it because of growth, and the town of Gardnerville will have up their brand new holiday lights and decorations,” she said. “We do hope people along the old route will just move their parties a few blocks to Highway 395.”
Traffic will be closed on Highway 395 during the parade and re-routed for the hour or so of the event, she said.
– Enter soon. Entries for the Dec. 2 parade are due Wednesday, Nov. 22. There is a $30 fee per entry. Categories for participants include:
– Civic group
– Paramedic, police, firefighter
Following the parade, the lighted floats and other entries will circle the park so community members can peruse them. Category winners will be announced at that time. Refreshments will be available for purchase in the park and traditionally, area businesses stay open late to accommodate early holiday shoppers.
