Deadline Friday for sheriff applications
The deadline is Friday at 4 p.m.for anyone wishing to become Douglas County sheriff.
Applicants must submit letters of intent outlining their qualifications and resumes to the Board of County Commissioners. Only Undersheriff Ron Pierini has applied, according to Clerk-Treasurer Barbara Reed.
County commissioners will review the applicants and choose the one they feel is most qualified. If Pierini is the only applicant, the position will probably be given to him.
“If we have only one person, that would be pretty much it,” said Clerk-Treasurer Barbara Reed.
Sheriff Jerry Maple announced in July he would retire Sept. 26, and the new sheriff would take over the remainder of his term through December 1998. When Maple announced his retirement, he said he wanted Pierini to be his replacement.
Anyone considered for the position must have law enforcement and management experience, and must be a qualified elector of Douglas County. Letters of intent and resumes must be submitted to the County Manager’s Office, attention Jacques Etchegoyhen, Chairman of the Board of County Commissioners, P.O. Box 218, Minden, 89423.
The pay for the position is $60,000.
Maple was first elected July 7, 1977, and has been re-elected every year since.
A party to honor Maple will be held Saturday at the Douglas County Fairgrounds Pavilion.
