Dead-tree firewood cutting areas open Monday
Dead-tree firewood cutting areas in Hope Valley and Leviathan areas open Monday, according to the Carson Ranger District, Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest.
Live-tree cutting areas opened on Saturday, and include Beagle in Dog Valley, Scotts Lake south of Woodfords, and Thomas Creek Canyon off of Mt. Rose Highway.
In the live-tree cutting areas, only designated trees may be cut and slash must be piled. Designated trees are described on the live-tree cutting area maps.
Season the live-tree firewood at least six months prior to burning to reduce air pollution and maximize the firewood’s heat value.
Firewood permits are valid through Nov. 15, cost $15 per cord, and have two-cord minimums and six-cord maximums per household per year. A fire extinguisher and a shovel are required when using a chainsaw for cutting firewood.
