New fans in boxes may be dropped off at the Douglas County Senior Center, 2300 Meadow Lane, Gardnerville, for the 2013 Summer Fan Drive for Seniors. Monetary donations may be made in lieu of a new fan. Recipients must be 60 or older, without air conditioning, and not have previously participated in the program. Information, (775) 783-6455.

With temperatures breaking the 100-degree mark, Douglas County Senior Services is looking for relief for some of the community’s most vulnerable citizens.

Senior Services Director Travis Lee is launching the first Summer Fan Drive to provide new electric fans for seniors in need.

“Douglas County Senior Services is concerned with the high temperatures and the huge impact that this has on seniors who do not have air conditioning. We have received a number of calls over the past couple of weeks of seniors needing fans,” Lee said.

In the past, fans that were dropped off at the center allowed Douglas County Senior Services to distribute fans to low-income, frail, and or seniors 60 years and older.

Lee said in the past two weeks, Senior Services’ homemakers and Meals on Wheels staff have been in the community, and seen the need for a more formal program to provide more seniors with fans.

Senior services is accepting new fans only to ensure the fans provided to senior citizens will be functional and dependable for 1-2 years, he said.

“Many other community organizations, including the Helping Hands Thrift Store and Catholic Charities, do accept ‘gently used’ fans, Lee said.

He said because of the heat, the senior center has had to cancel picnics in the park, so seniors can remain in air-conditioning while at the center, thus curtailing some of the summer’s most popular programs.

“A lot of home-bound seniors are finding it exceptionally hot over past summers,” Lee said.

Lee said he hoped to collect at least 50 new fans.

New fans may be dropped off or picked up at the Douglas County Senior Center, 2300 Meadow Lane, Gardnerville.

Seniors in need of fans should contact Douglas County Senior Services (775) 783-6455 or stop by the center.

To qualify, recipients must be 60 years of age or older. Seniors without air conditioning and those who have not previously participated in the program are a priority to receive new fans.
