Company discontinues individual taxi service

by Linda Hiller

Budget Chauffeur Drive has discontinued individual taxi service in the Carson Valley.

The Carson City-based company will continue to provide shuttle/taxi service on No Stress Express vans from the Valley, Topaz Lake, Woodfords, South Lake Tahoe and North Shore to and from the Reno-Tahoe International Airport.

“We actually run 15 vehicles in a 100-mile radius of the Reno Airport and will continue to do so,” said Bob Fairman, the company’s owner.

The taxi service had been available to Minden and Gardnerville customers for more than two years and was discontinued last month due to another company entering the Carson Valley market.

“We realize this was probably good for the traveling public, but it created a problem for Budget Chauffeur Drive, our taxi division and our drivers,” Fairman said. “While we welcome competition, there needs to be a market to support a second taxi company, and in the case of Minden and Gardnerville, this has created a financial hardship that we were not able to absorb. The taxi operation has always been unprofitable.”

Budget Chauffeur Drive was granted a “hold” for its taxi number on May 11, Fairman said, and has six months to decide whether to resume.

“We have the three taxis parked right here in the yard, but at this time I doubt we’ll continue,” he said.

Budget Chauffeur Drive has operated the No Stress Express van-shuttle service from Sharkey’s and the Carson Valley Inn to the Reno-Tahoe Airport for the past five years.
