A misdemeanor vehicular manslaughter charge has been filed in the January death of a toddler in a three-vehicle collision at Johnson Lane and Highway 395.

David R. Neese Jr., 53, is facing a July hearing in East Fork Justice Court, the Douglas County District Attorney’s Office revealed on Wednesday.

A Fernley resident, Neese was the driver of a Chevrolet 3500 work truck towing a trailer was northbound when it failed to slow for traffic ahead, striking the rear of a Nissan on Jan. 17.

The Nissan was pushed out of the way by the force of the collision.

The pickup then collided with the rear of a Honda Fit that was stopped in the left lane.

Both the driver and the 21-month-old toddler, who was in the back seat, were transported for treatment. The toddler was in a car seat.

According to emergency personnel on scene, the driver of the Fit was the child’s grandmother.
