Carson Valley lights up the holiday

With a month and a day until Christmas, this week will see the start of the holiday celebration in Carson Valley designed to make spirits bright.

Events start Thursday evening in Gardnerville with a bang at the annual Gardnerville Christmas Kickoff at Heritage Park.

The town continues its tradition of holiday fireworks and adds a performance by the Sierra Ringers Bell Choir and the Joyful Noise Children’s Choir.

Expect people to gather around 5 p.m. at the Heritage Park Pavilion.

Genoa and Minden start their holiday seasons on Friday night with Nevada’s oldest town hosting caroling in the town church and the lighting of Hope Falcke’s tree at Nixon and Main streets. Genoans will be serving breakfast with Santa Claus on Dec. 1, giving children an opportunity for some facetime with the big guy. He’ll be busy this week with appearances in Gardnerville and Minden, too.

Minden will host music from the Douglas High School Jazz Band on Friday night as part of its annual gazebo lighting.

A s’mores roasting fire pit and a holiday donation drive hosted by the Carson Valley Food Closet. Children that share a donation or canned food item are invited to help Santa light the Gazebo.

Santa’s Workshop is going mobile on Dec. 1 with the 23rd annual Parade of Lights 5 p.m. Dec. 1.

The parade will close Highway 395 starting around 3:30 p.m. between Buckeye Road and Waterloo Lane and will features floats for organizations from across the county.

Sponsored by the Carson Valley Chamber of Commerce, the parade starts at Heritage Park and wraps up at Minden Park.

The Douglas County Historical Society’s annual Holiday Gala features Santa’s Cookie Shop, the Gallery of Trees, Gingerbread House display, Selfies with Santa, the Snow Globe Tower, and Letters to Santa. Festivities start at 10 a.m., Dec. 1.

Red and blue will exchange for green and red as two Douglas political women’s clubs both of which are seeking reservations by Friday.

Douglas County Democratic Women will be celebrating a holidays afternoon tea featuring the Douglas High School Mistral Choir 2-4:30 p.m. Dec. 3 at the Carson Valley Inn. Cost is $25. Reservations are required by noon on Nov. 29. RSVP to or 267-0539. Information, visit

Christmas is also the theme at the Douglas County Republican Women’s December meeting will be 11 a.m. Dec. 5 at Carson Valley Inn, Minden. Laura Bridwell will be singing Christmas carols at noon. Doors open at 11. Buffet lunch begins at 11:45 a.m. Gift items available from our boutique. Raffle tickets are available for purchase as well as the 50/50 raffle. Reservations are required.
