Business owners planning for Christmas lights

Staff reports

A committee of business owners in Gardnerville wants their town to look festive at Christmastime.

With the backing of the town of Gardnerville, the group is raising funds to purchase holiday decorations and has planned a Downtown Hoedown and Karaoke Contest for Friday, Aug. 25.

According to Sandy Anderson of the Country Carousel, the grand prize at the hoedown will be a trip for two to Mexico. Other prizes in the raffle drawing will be gift baskets, custom knives, dinners at area restaurants and three Ducks Unlimited prints, which are framed, numbered and signed.

The hoedown fund-raiser will offer food, drinks, dancing and a dunk tank, Anderson said, where locals may “dunk their favorite bartender.”

The event will begin at 6 p.m. and last until the fun is over in the lot between Sharkey’s and the JT in front of the Carson Valley Heating and Air Conditioning building.

The goal, Anderson said, is to make Gardnerville look festive, as does Minden, during the Christmas season. The committee hopes to be able to purchase enough decorations to decorate every light pole from the border of the town at the GTE building to the stoplight at the Smith’s-Scolari’s intersection at Highway 395 and Waterloo.

On the committee are Marie Lekumberry of the JT Basque Bar and Dining Room, Mashelle Begovich of Sharkey’s, Marcia Voeller of Especially for You and Jeannie Johnson of the Historian Inn.

They – plus other business owners – have raffle tickets to sell. The group is in the process of asking other Gardnerville businesses to join in the effort, Anderson said.
