Business Administration courses offered at SNC

by Joyce Hollister

Four courses that will lead to a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Sierra Nevada College will be offered at the Western Nevada Community College, Douglas campus this fall.

“WNCC had 25 percent growth last year,” said Jan Dyer, off-campus program coordinator for SNC, who has been working closely with WNCC Dean Bus Scharmann on the new program. “A part of the growth was a recognition that many students do not want to stop with just an associate degree. And often times, a bachelor’s degree is essential for promotion in many, many businesses.”

Students will take their first two years of required courses at WNCC. These classes may be taken concurrently with the SNC classes, according to Dyer.

Dyer said she and WNCC administrators are excited about this first partnership between the Incline Village college and the new Douglas County WNCC campus.

Staff members at both colleges have been talking about bringing a four-year program to Douglas, she said, and the business administration degree was selected as a result of a student survey.

“We had over 125 respond for the business degree,” Dyer said. “Knowing that this program will spread primarily by word of mouth, we decided we need only about 20 students to begin.”

The four courses to be offered starting in the fall are: BU 351, marketing research, which will be held Mondays and Wednesdays, 3:30-5 p.m.; BU 351, corporate finance, Tuesdays and Thursdays, 3:30-5 p.m.; BU 430, business policy and strategy, Fridays, 2-5 p.m.; and BU 464, human resources, Saturdays, 9-noon.

Dyer said most likely more classes will be offered on Saturdays in coming semesters and many will be offered on Friday late afternoons so that people who work may obtain their degree.

What with this schedule plus summer classes, many students will be able to finish up in two years, she said.

A list of the lower division general education requirements for the degree may be obtained by calling Western Nevada Community College, 782-2413, or Dyer at Sierra Nevada College, (702) 831-1314, ext. 3135. Also call Dyer for an application to SNC.

Registration for the Sierra Nevada College classes will be held Aug. 12 and 13 and 19 and 20. Handouts explaining the four NC business courses are available at WNCC Douglas.

Registration for the fall continues now for WNCC by touch telephone. For information or a schedule, call the WNCC office, which is located at 1680 Bently Parkway S., off Buckeye Road, Minden.

Copies of the fall schedule were mailed to all residents in June. Copies are also available at the Douglas County Public Library, Minden.
