Bingo party to benefit shelter fund
Domestic violence is one of the number one calls for service by the sheriff’s office in Douglas County.
Recognizing the need for a shelter for domestic violence victims and their children, the Douglas County Sheriff’s Protection Association will offer a Harvest Bingo party to raise funds for the Family Support Council of Douglas County’s shelter fund this Friday.
“This entire idea came about at a Community Action Team meeting months ago,” said Dep. Teresa Duffy of the DCSO.
“The CAT is made up different community members, students, business owners, community leaders and everyday people in our community who want to make a difference.”
The group’s mission is to identify goals or problems in the community and find solutions and methods to resolve the problems or accomplish these goals, Duffy said.
Duffy, following a meeting of CAT, contacted Mark Munoz of the Sheriff’s Protective Association, who agreed with her that the group could help with the fund-raising efforts.
Douglas County has no temporary facilities to house victims of domestic violence. The Family Support Council has to place victims in Carson City or temporarily house them in a motel, and the agency has been raising money for a shelter of its own.
“With the funds raised from this Bingo event,” Duffy said, “We hope to make a dent in the efforts going toward the establishment of this shelter. An association philosophy is that making positive changes in our community helps us to bring hope and strength to those who need it most.”
The Bingo party will be held Friday beginning at 7:30 p.m. at the CVIC Hall in old downtown Minden.
The many businesses which have donated prizes to the Harvest Bingo party include Heavenly Ski Resort, Ivano’s, Denny’s, Ironwood Theaters, The Treehouse, M.X. Dixie, Bouquet and Bouquet, Silver Legacy Resort Casino, Fantasy Inn, R&T Cleaners, Jethro’s Oven & Grill and Capt. Kirk’s Beach Club.
