Benefit Sunday for woman with tumor

Linda Hiller

A benefit for Mindy Schuler and her family will be held Sunday, June 29 at the CVIC Hall in Minden, 1604 Esmeralda.

Mindy, 33, was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor on April 1 and had surgery to remove it May 12 in a nine-hour operation at the UCLA Medical Center.

Since then, she has had to discontinue her day care business to attend daily radiation treatments in Carson City, and the family also faces many medical costs that are not covered by their health insurance.

Friends of Mindy have planned a spaghetti dinner and Bingo evening, with food and prizes donated by many Valley businesses.

The spaghetti dinner will be served from 5-7 p.m. and costs $5 for adults and $2.50 for children 12 and under.

Bingo will be from 7-9 p.m., $10 for a 15-pack with 6 games on each sheet.

There will be door prizes and a raffle for a $500 value “A Night on the Town at Harrah’s Lake Tahoe,” which includes round-trip limousine service by Sierra West Limousine for dinner at two at Cafe Andreotti, two tickets for “Spellbound” and one night’s accommodations at Harrah’s Lake Tahoe. Raffle tickets are $1 each or 6 for $5 – available at the door.

Donors for the benefit include: Sharkey’s Casino who will be cooking and donating the spaghetti dinner; Tip-Top amusement, beverages; Pop Warner, desserts; Wayne’s Glass, coffee and paper goods; Scolari’s, paper goods; Mission Linen, linen; Trinity Lutheran Child Care Center, decorations; Silver State Printing, tickets; Douglas County Explorers, Bingo equipment; Rites of Passage, clean-up crew.

Bingo and door prizes have been donated by Classical Glass, Valley-Do-It, Sally Neddenriep, Mason Valley Bear Company, Michaels or Fiona’s Restaurant (Carson Valley Inn), Arby’s, Tumblewind, Shylocks, The Nail Shoppe, Coast to Coast, Stratton Drug Store, J&T Restaurant, Major Video, Meadowdale Theatres, Wild Hair Salon, Trudy at Hair Cottage, Abuela’s, Woodette’s, Bouquet and Bouquet, Pizza Barn and Superior Car Wash.

Sandra Bain, one of the event organizers, said over 500 raffle tickets had been sold by Monday.

Anyone unable to attend the benefit, but wishing to help the Schuler family can make a donation to the Mindy Schuler savings account at Greater Nevada Credit Union at 1545 Highway 395 in Minden.
