Band gets $10,000 pledge to be matched

Staff reports

Hoping to encourage other donors, an anonymous Minden couple have pledged $10,000 in matching contributions to the Douglas High School band’s Inaugural trip.

The band was the only group in Nevada selected to play at George W. Bush’s Inauguration Jan. 20. The band was notified two weeks ago and must raise $65,000 to pay for airfare, food and rooms for 60 band members and 10 adults. Band director Bill Zabelsky said the group raised $5,400 as of Tuesday morning without the matching funds.

On Tuesday, the Minden couple, who asked to remain anonymous, contacted Zabelsky with the news of their donation, saying it was a real honor for the band to play at the Inaugural. The couple also donated to the band 12 years ago when the band marched in George Bush’s Inauguration parade. The donor said they would match any donations by individuals up to $10,000.

“This is to give them a good launch. We supported the school in the past. We are also starting a scholarship program. We just have an interest in the education system. Our children graduated from there. We just do what we can,” the donor said.
