Friday the 13th of December marks the date for the annual Channel 2 “Share Your Christmas” Food Drive at the Carson Valley Inn.

The long time organizers are asking everyone around town to come and drop off their food and monetary donations to benefit the Carson Valley Community Food Closet.

Hours are 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., rain or shine, in the north parking lot of the Carson Valley Inn.

The food closet provides food relief for more than 13,000 family visits with over 380,000 meals for 2013.

“This is a source of pride for the community, to help each other, and each year outdo the last. Scolari’s was a generous doner to the food closet, and now with its closing, the food closet will be making do with less,” organizers said. “Precious funds will be used to purchase needed food from the Northern Nevada Food Bank, so monetary donations are extra important this year. A majority of the food closet’s clients are visiting not only for temporary assistance, but for continuing sustenance, so please come on out and show your support.”

The Bloodmobile will also be on site taking blood donations from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Santa will be landing in the CareFlight helicopter at 10 a.m.

“Many member businesses and individuals here help in a huge way with this event,” organizers said. “Thanks go to Bill Henderson at CVI for all of his work for this event as well as Mike Wiley, chairman of the board of directors with the food closet.”

Channel 2 News will have Arianna Bennett, Chris Ciarlo and Adam Varahachaikol to chronicle the festivities. Also on hand will be Back Country Horsemen, the steel drum band from Pau-Wa-Lu Middle School, Douglas High School jazz band, the bell choir from Carson Valley United Methodist Church, “Boomer” from Douglas Disposal and a fire engine from the East Fork Fire & Paramedic Districts. A crew from Right of Passage volunteers will be on hand help collect food donations.

“There will be candy canes for the kids, and donations from them would be appreciated,” organizers said.

For more information call the food closet at 782-3711. Donations may be mailed to the food closet at 1255 Waterloo Lane Unit B, Gardnerville, 89410.
