Amgen, road closures hit Valley Friday

Stage two of the Amgen Breakaway from Heart Disease Women's Race will bring cyclists through Alpine County and Carson Valley on Friday.
The four-stage women's race starts Thursday and continues through Sunday in Sacramento. The Amgen Tour of California men's race will be held Sunday through May 20.
The women's race will include 16 teams with 120 athletes. The first stage covers 72.7 miles on a loop around Lake Tahoe.
Stage two on Friday will start at approximately 10:25 a.m. from Heavenly Mountain Resort in South Lake Tahoe. The route will take competitors over Luther Pass on Highway 89 to Hope Valley, then east along Highway 88 toward Woodfords. Cyclists will pass through Diamond Valley, then turn north along Foothill Road and return to South Lake Tahoe over Kingsbury Grade.
Through traffic at Kingsbury Grade is scheduled to be held at 12:30 p.m.
Since its inception in 2006, the Amgen Tour of California has become one of the most important races on the international cycling calendar, showcasing cyclists from around the world. The men's race will cover 575 miles through 12 Host Cities from Sacramento to Pasadena.
