The American Legion High Desert Post 56 needs help honoring veterans, specifically during funerals.

Post 56 is in need of more members for their Honor Guard, which attends veteran funerals.

“We are in need of veterans who will commit themselves to provide military honors to departed veterans, which represents a final tribute to the veteran for serving their country,” Honor Guard Captain Leon Werner said. “In addition, the military honors provided not only honor the veteran, but also show the gratitude of a grateful nation to the veteran’s family.”

The services the Honor Guard provides include the three-volley salute, folding and presenting of the American flag to the family and the playing of Taps.

Honor Guard members do not have to be a member of the Legion, but do have to be a veteran.

Interested veterans should call Werner at 722-6319 or attend one of the Post’s monthly meetings.

The meetings are at 6:30 p.m. the second Thursday of the month at the Veteran’s Hall in Carson City located at 2nd and Curry Street.
