Alleged raccoon skinner, sex offender arrested at South Lake
A report of a man using a large knife to skin a dead animal in an open lot led South Lake Tahoe police to a suspect with bloody hands holding a nearly skinned raccoon on Monday afternoon.
Officers spotted the man in the lot between the Tahoe Daily Tribune and the Snow Flake Drive-in
When they tried to talk to him, he ran a full block down Harrison Avenue, across all five lanes of Highway 50 and then down Los Angeles Avenue before turning down Rufus Allen toward St. Theresa’s School.
Officers caught up to the man on the ballfield next to South Tahoe Middle School, where he was taken into custody. Officers identified him as registered sex offender and parolee Kevin Burroughs, 37, who was wanted for being at-large.
In addition to a charge of possessing a creature unlawfully taken, Burroughs also faces charges of resisting arrest, failing to register as a sex offender, being a sex offender on school grounds and being a parolee at large.
Officers said they didn’t see the knife Burroughs allegedly used to skin the raccoon.
