Airport meeting celebrates flight
The Minden-Tahoe Airport hosts an open house celebrating 100 years of powered flight today.
On Dec. 17, 1903, Wilbur and Orville Wright made the first powered/controlled flight in an airplane.
The brothers launched the first powered flight in Kitty Hawk, N.C. — a 12-second, 120-foot jaunt that produced one of the most reprinted photographs in history.
There were three more flights that day, traveling farther each time as the brothers got used to the plane’s front rudder. The final flight of the day lasted 59 seconds and traveled 852 feet.
Douglas County Commissioners issued a proclamation recognizing the anniversary at its meeting earlier this month.
The open house will be held at the airport administration offices, 1146 Airport Road, Minden. Airport volunteers will be recognized for their contributions throughout the year with food, beverages and cake.
