$175,000 to be donated to WNCC today
The largest single cash donation yet will be made today to the Western Nevada Community College’s new Douglas campus.
A check for $175,000 will be given to deans Bus Scharmann and Helaine Jesse from the Robert A. Bush Estate by executors Charles and Vicki Hone of Minden and estate attorney George Keele.
“Bob attended classes at the Carson campus for several years, but was keenly interested in the Douglas building project,” said Jesse, who is the new dean of institutional advancement at WNCC.
“He told me several years ago that he wanted to be part of bringing a campus to the area and would do what he could. He certainly has blessed us beyond our wildest dreams.”
One half of the funds are directed to be used for campus materials and will be used for new equipment.
“We’ve been so focused on raising money for construction of the building,” Jesse said, “that this donation will attend to some of the equipment needs – to really make it state of the art.”
n Scholarship funds. The other half will be used for a generous scholarship to be given every year until the funds are gone. Bush directed that a $1,500 scholarship be given to one student every semester.
The student must be enrolled as a WNCC candidate for an associate degree in mathematics, chemistry or nursing.
“Just think what this will do for a single parent, for instance,” Jesse said of the large amount of the scholarship.
The student who is awarded the scholarship may attend any campus.
The donation has been in the works for a year. The funds came for the sale of the late Mr. Bush’s ranch in Carson Valley.
“I’ve been working very closely with Charles and Vicki Hone and, of course, George Keele,” Jesse said. “They’ve been fabulous to work with and they are very committed and dedicated to the intent of Mr. Bush’s wishes.
“If you can hear us Bob, we thank you very much.”
