Local student recipient of scholarships for military children
Aubrey Caires of Gardnerville is the recipient of a $2,000 scholarship from the Scholarship for Military Children Program.
Caires is the daughter of Leonard Caires Jr. and Leeann Caires. She plans to enroll at Whittier College in Whittier, Calif.
Caires’ school and community activities include volleyball and volleyball coach, National Honor Society, Candy Dance Volunteer and Leadership committee.
The scholarships of Military Children Program was initiated in 2000 to award to graduating high school seniors or college-enrolled students. The scholarship program is open to qualified sons and daughters of members of the U.S. Armed Services including active duty, retirees, guard/reserves, as well as children of deceased military personnel. Applicants for the 2017 program were required to maintain a minimum 3.0 grade point average, participate in voluntary school and community activities, demonstrate leadership qualities and write and essay on “If you had the chance to have a 30-minute conversation with any person in human history (either living or deceased), who would be the person you choose? Why? What topic would you discuss with this person?”
