Last day sees big rush to sign up for health insurance

Open enrollment for health insurance offered on Nevada Health Link closed Monday with extremely high traffic counts, state officials said.
The last day to enroll saw over 7,000 simultaneous users filling out applications and shopping for income-based health insurance plans.
The final enrollment numbers saw a strong surge in the last two days of the enrollment period.

■ 139,442 consumers submitted applications for coverage through Medicaid

Consumers who confirmed plan selections have until April 15 to pay for the plans and receive a May 1, effective date.
As of today, 25,899 consumers have paid for their health insurance plans and 23,553 consumers have paid for dental coverage.
Of the paid enrollments, Clark and Nye counties were home to the most enrollees with 68 percent of the total. Washoe County followed with 21.6 percent, Carson City, Douglas, Lyon and Storey counties had 8.1 percent and the rest of the state came in with 2.3 percent of total enrollment.
"The swell in enrollment activity as the deadline neared could be measured by the hour," said Silver State Health Insurance Exchange Interim Executive Director Steve Fisher. "The successful enrollment events in Las Vegas and Reno on Saturday combined with the extraordinary number of Nevadans enrolling on Monday pushed the enrollment numbers to the current levels."
Tuesday marked the beginning of a 60-day special enrollment period that will end on May 30. Consumers who encountered technical difficulty while attempting to enroll in health insurance policies on Nevada Health Link before the close of open enrollment will have 60 days to finalize their plan selection and pay.
