Kiwanis ‘Wheel Drive’ gets into high gear

by Rosemarie Middendorf

Do you have a bike, tricycle, wagon or scooter that always seems to be in the way? We can help you dispose of that bothersome item. You can donate it to the Gardnerville, Carson VAlley Kiwanis Club who have now put the annual “Wheel Drive” in high gear, with the final collection for the year of the “wheels” in support of Project Santa Claus.

This program started in 1990 by the Kiwanis Club, which has donated the reconditioned bicycles, etc., as well as the cost of the refurbishing of these items once they have been checked over, cleaned up and/or repaired, to the Project Santa Claus Program.

The club has been assisted by the youngsters at China Spring-Youth Camp, who work year round to repair the donated wheels. They have been joined by the youths at the Rite of Passage Training Center in this endeavor. Approximately 100 bicycles have been provided each year to Project Santa Claus, according to Willie Kersey, bicycle chairman for the Kiwanis. Should you have one of these items you would like to have picked up (no junk please), contact Kersey at 265-6494 or Jerry Rasmussen 265-9406 and/or drop items by the Gardnerville Ranchos General Improvement District (GRID), 931 Mitch Drive, or the Town of Gardnerville, 1369 Highway. 395, place them near the blue trash cans, between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Project Santa Claus operates annually under the auspices of the Carson Valley Community Food Closet. The goal is to “put a sparkle in the eye of a child” by providing Christmas gifts for the children of families experiencing an economic setback.

All recipient families are interviewed and approved by the staff of Douglas County Social Services department. Contributions are tax-deductible, and momentary donations are gladly accepted. Cash will be used to purchase gifts for any child who is not sponsored through various activities of Project Santa Claus.

For information regarding Project Santa Claus, contact Marilyn Malkmus, director, 782-4931, or to make a monetary donation, address it to Project Santa Claus, P.o. Box 5351, Gardnerville 89410.
