Kids’ Fishing Derby Inc. seeks help

Staff reports

Kids’ Fishing Derby Inc. is planning this year’s free event for children and is looking for help.

The derby will be held June 3 and 4 at Lampe Park in Gardnerville. More than 2,500 kids fished in 1999 in the 10th annual event.

Theme of the derby is “Get hooked on fishing, not drugs.” The organization works with Nevada Division of Wildlife, Lahontan National Fish Hatchery and the Douglas County Parks and Recreation Division to offer the event to kids aged 3 to 12.

For the last two years, a time slot was set up for children with special needs and foster children. Fishing hooks and bait, and loaner rods and reels if necessary, are provided free to all who enter the derby.

The derby could use financial support or raffle prizes. With the donations, the committee is able to purchase fishing poles, bait and other supplies. Call Pamela Rodrigues at 265-1795 to donate.

Volunteers are needed during the derby. Anyone 14 or older is welcome. Contact Tim Lietz at 265-5814 for volunteer information.

Kids’ Fishing Derby Inc. is a non-profit corporation and donations are tax-deductible.
