Immunization Week is coming up

Staff reports

Nevada hospitals are partnering with state and local immunization authorities, community groups and businesses to present a statewide Childhood Immunization Week April 8 to 15. This is the third year this coalition has highlighted the importance of immunization.

The goals are two-fold:

Provide an event for Nevada’s children aged birth to 2 years to obtain free vaccinations at numerous locations statewide in conjunction with statewide promotional and educational campaign.

Educate parents about the importance of completing immunizations series and of keeping immunizations records for their children.

Last year, statewide, 20 clinics were held, 13 hospitals participated and 716 children were helped with 1,968 vaccinations. In the Reno-Sparks area, 404 children and adults received immunizations – a rise of 8.3 percent from the previous year.

A free clinic is taking place Saturday, April 15, between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. inside the Carson Mall Shopping Center at 1313 S. Carson Street in Carson City. Vaccines are given free of charge to infants, toddlers, school-age children and adolescents.

Immunization clinics are planned in 13 locations around the state during the week of April 9 to 15, including the communities of Carson City, Elko, Ely, Fallon, Hawthorne, Henderson, Las Vegas, North Las Vegas, Reno/Sparks and Winnemucca. Sixteen Nevada Hospitals are collaborating with their local county health department or public health clinic to host and/or staff these clinics, including Carson-Tahoe Hospital.

These are working with the following community partners who are providing financial and product assistance: American Medical Response, International Game Technology, Merck Pharmaceuticals, and SmithKline Beecham Pharmaceuticals.

Statewide community partners are Nevada Hospital Association, Nevada State Health Division and Wyeth-Lederle Vaccines.

Sponsors from Northern Nevada are Crystal Springs, Miguel Ribera Family Resource Center, Model Dairy, Nevada Public Health Foundation, North Reno Kiwanis Club, REMSA/CareFlight, Reno Fire Department, Sparks Fire Department, University of Nevada Reno-Orvis School of Nursing, Washoe County District Health Department, Washoe County Immunization Coalition, Washoe County School District and WIC.
