Hellwinkel honored by Beta Sigma Phi

The Carson Valley Beta Sigma Phi Sorority chose Marlena Hellwinkel; as the Woman of the Year for 2000.

Paula Corley of Laureate Nu Chapter presented the award to Hellwinkel at a meeting April 27 at the Carson Valley Brewery. Hellwinkel; was asked to attend the meeting under the premise of making a speech about the Carson Valley Historical Society. The organization every year gives the award to a woman who is not part of the sorority. Hellwinkel; was given an engraved silver tray by the group.

Hellwinkel is part of a early ranching family, the Neddenrieps, and graduated from Douglas High School in 1952.

She married Don Hellwinkel;, whose family has owned COD garage since 1919.

She is a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church, Historical society, Fortnightly Club, Minden Business Club Western Nevada CattleWomen’s Association and was the first woman in this area to ride the Pony Express in 1990.

She was named the Citizen of the Year by the Elks Club this year and the Cattlewoman of the Year last year.
