Golf: Douglas Tigers 3rd at Genoa Lakes
The Douglas High boys golf team battled through high winds Monday afternoon to take third at the Sierra League tournament at Genoa Lakes.
Douglas shot a team score of 443, coming in behind Bishop Manogue (402) and Galena (407). Damonte Ranch was fourth (452) and Carson was fifth (454) followed by Wooster in sixth.
Galena’s Kenny Short was the individual medalist, shooting a 72.
“The Douglas golfers are beginning to realize that if they all play well, they can compete with the best,” Douglas coach Brent Eddy said. “Overall, it was a tough day for all the players as the winds were high and the course was playing extremely difficult.”
Shane Pyle led the Tigers with an 81, which was good enough for sixth overall, Colin Brooks shot an 84 and Mike Doyle shot a 88.
Matt Johnson came in at 94, Jason Connolly shot a 96 and Zander Ghan shot a 101.
“Although Shane would say he was not happy with his round, there were only 4 or 5 players in the 70s,” Eddy said. “Another bright spot was Colin Brooks. Colin has a great swing and is really starting to develop into a player.
“Although he is a freshman, he is an extremely mature kid. Mike Doyle had another solid round, finishing again in the 80s.”
Douglas doesn’t compete again until April 17.
“We will have some time to work on getting better as a group,” Eddy said.
