Free tax help at senior center

Staff reports

Free tax help is available through the Tax-Aide program sponsored by the Internal Revenue Service and American Association of Retired Persons. Tax counselors will be on hand to help low- to middle-income families, students and the elderly with their 1997 income tax returns.

This service is offered by appointment at the Senior Citizens Center, 2300 Meadow Lane, Gardnerville. Call 782-8267 to make an appointment. Counselors will be available every Thursday, Feb. 5 through April 9, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

You need to provide your copy of last year’s tax return as well as the 1997 tax package. Also take your W-2s, forms 1099 or substitute statements showing interest, dividends, social security and any tax exempt interest.

Counselors are not trained to prepare complicated returns involving partnerships, businesses, rental property, alternative minimum taxable income or forms related to these subjects.
