Staff reports

Master gardeners from University of Nevada Cooperative Extension are offering a free 4-inch master gardener-grown herb plant to people who take a canned food donation to Lockette and Sullivan’s 25th annual Northern Nevada Spring Home and Garden Show at the Reno Sparks Convention Center, 4590 S. Virginia, on March 31 from 2 to 9 p.m., April 1 from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. or April 2, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

The program will benefit five local charities, as part of the master gardeners ongoing “Harvest for the Hungry”project.

Last year was the first year of the Plants for Cans Exchange, and 490 cans of food were collected and given to local charities, according to project creator and coordinator Janis Whitmyer, master gardener. Eight herb varieties will be available this year: common thyme, summer savory, curly parsley, Italian parsley and four basils – green ruffle, sweet, purple and lemon.

The Master Gardener program, as part of University of Nevada Cooperative Extension, trains local gardeners and works with them to disseminate environmentally sensitive gardening information to their communities. Call the extension at 784-4848 for more information.
