Firefighters fill the boot for Muscular Dystrophy
The East Fork Professional Firefighters IAFF Local No. 3726 will walk the Carson Valley Days parade route collecting donations for the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA).
Public Affairs Officer Walt Kesteloot urges everyone attending the parade to “bring a buck.” With an estimated crowd of 5,000 people attending the parade and activities at Lampe Park, Kesteloot is optimistic that the firefighters can rapidly reach their 2013 Boot Drive goal of $5,000 or better.
The off-duty firefighters will walk the parade route alongside a retired 1952 Seagraves ladder truck owned by Brad & Julie Hollander of Minden. Riding on the truck is a local MDA family.
All the money collected for MDA during Carson Valley Days stays in Northern Nevada and benefits local families.
In addition to assisting MDA families with medical expenses and equipment, the local MDA chapter coordinates an annual summer camp for MDA children at the 4-H campground at Lake Tahoe. Firefighters from all around Nevada volunteer their time with the camp counselors and children each year at the summer camp.
“As firefighters, we are dedicated to providing service, strength, and hope in someone’s time of need,” said Kesteloot, “But it is humbling and inspiring to see the inner strength, courage, and faith in these children and their families.”
After the parade, the firefighters will set up a booth in the Walgreens parking lot and display the ladder truck. MDA donations will be collected at the booth as well.
“Please bring a buck to the parade and meet your IAFF Local No. 3726 firefighters after the parade,” Kesteloot said. “We would like to thank Walgreens for donating the use of their parking lot after the parade.”
