Family Support offers special needs workshop for parents

Staff Reports

On Saturday, Aug. 23, the Family Support Council will hold a community-wide “Special Needs” workshop.

“Family Support is excited to announce this one-of-a kind event. The community is invited to attend and participate in any and all services offered free of charge,” said Deborah Van Bruggen, Parents and Children Together program coordinator.

Stressed-out parents can have a free chair massage, and Robin, the balloon lady, will be making balloon creations for all the kids and adults. A free lunch will be provided for all participants.

Among the services provided will be a wheelchair evaluation, with expert help from a wheelchair rehab technology supplier from Medtech Services. A licensed physical therapist will also be available to assist the technician. The technician and physical therapist will be evaluating if wheelchairs are properly adjusted to each client’s needs and body type. Some minor repairs will be available. Assessments and referrals for more extensive repairs will also take place. This is open to all children and adults in wheelchairs.

There will be a dietitian as well as a nutrition specialist on site. The nutrition specialist is Lace England, who has some of the latest information on nutrition and children with ADD (Attention Deficit Disorder) or ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder). She will make hair testing available to determine chemical imbalances in the body. This is optional and there will be a small fee to cover her cost of the lab test.

Staff from various agencies around the community will also be on hand to answer questions and provide information on the various services that are offered in the area for special needs children and adults. Some of the other activities planned are a video presentation on the proper lifting technique for removing a child or adult from a wheelchair, information table from the Center for Independent Living, the recreation division, Eagle Valley Children’s Home and more.

The workshop will be held on Saturday, Aug. 23 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Family Support Council Building at 1255 Waterloo Lane, Gardnerville. For more information on participation or to RSVP, call Deborah Van Bruggen at 782-8692.
