Elks set Law and Order Night
200 tickets will be sold for the annual Minden-Douglas Elks’ annual Law and Order Night set for May 15 at the CVIC Hall in Minden.
The event is a salute to law enforcement and is usually sold out, said Sgt. Lance Modispacher of the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office.
Law and Order Night features a steak dinner cooked by members of the Elks lodge. Guest speaker will be Robert Ellison, chief of security at Bently Nevada Corp. in Minden.
Law enforcement officers are honored during the dinner, according to Elk Bill Shay, who has been chairman of the dinner for several years.
“We honor several different law enforcement agencies, primarily the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office. We recognize an officer of the year and supervisor of the year or administrator of the year, depending,” Shay said.
The agencies also give out internal awards. Involved are the state prison system, highway patrol, division of parole and probation, Nevada division of investigations, and in the past, the Alpine County Sheriff’s Office.
The dinner has been held in September, but was moved to May 15 to coincide with Peace Officers Memorial Day as proclaimed by the U.S. Congress in 1962. The week during which May 15 falls was declared Police Week.
According to the Joint Resolution issued by both houses of Congress, Peace Officers Memorial Day is in honor of state, federal and municipal officers who have been killed or disabled in the line of duty, and Police Week was declared to recognize the service given by the men and women of law enforcement for their dedicated service to their communities.
The dinner costs $10 and tickets are limited. To obtain ticket information, call Shay at 782-8666, Roy Hoyt at 267-4355 or Connie Helms, 782-9900.
