Douglas High School takes top placings in debate tournament

Douglas High School speech and debate team members took top placings in a Northern Nevada Forensic League speech and debate tournament at Bishop Manogue High School, Reno, held Sept. 29-30.

The team includes 10th-12th grade students at Douglas High School and 9th grade students at Carson Valley Middle School and Pau-Wa-Lu Middle School. Coaches are Marty Cronin (DHS), Rommy Cronin (PWLMS) and Allen Gumm (CVMS).

First place winners were Zachary Tretton and Rachel Robison in the duo interpretation novice (9th grade, PWLMS); Thomas Sawicki, dramatic interpretation novice (10th grade, DHS); Paul Mileo, after dinner speaking novice (10th grade, DHS).

Second place winners were Samantha Goldstein, expository speaking senior (12th grade, DHS); Gian Brehm, extemporaneous speaking novice (11th grade, DHS); Drew Hedwall and Summer Carter, duo interpretation novice (9th grade, PWLMS).

Finalists included Mason Beinschroth, expository speaking novice (10th grade, DHS); Nick Fiori, extemporaneous speaking novice (10th grade, DHS); Megan Hughes and Sarah Henningsen duo interpretation novice (9th grade, PWLMS); Katie Gillard and Heidi O’Hair, duo senior (11th grade, DHS); Victoria Gay, dramatic interpretation novice (9th grade PWLMS).

Quarter-finalists were Allison Hughes, Lincoln-Douglas debate novice (10th grade, DHS); Matt Austin, Lincoln-Douglas debate senior (10th grade, DHS).

Superior speaker was Katie Fricano, mock Congress group (11th grade, DHS).
