Douglas High rodeo queen named
Jessica Helms is the 2000 Miss Douglas High School Rodeo Club Queen, capturing the title in a contest held on March 16. The competition included horsemanship, personal interview, appearance, personality, a two-minute speech, impromptu question and a 50-point test.
Jessica is a junior at Douglas High School. She is the granddaughter of Tom and Gaye McCaslin. Her rodeo events are barrel racing, pole bending and break-away roping. Jessica gave a speech titled “These Boots are Made for Walking” during the evening portion of the competition held at Sharkey’s.
First runner-up was Douglas High School sophomore Mary Richardson. Mary is the daughter of Mashelle Begovich and Jim Richardson. Mary’s rodeo events are barrel racing and pole bending.
Judges for the day-long event were Kathryn Oxoby, Bob Kawcak and Barbara Mahon. The DHSRC thanks their judges, as well as auditors for competition Sue Anker and Laurill Tran, coordinator Bunny Peterson, Coy Sanders for the use of his arena, Clothes Horse for the donation of the queen buckle, Bouquet and Bouquet for the queen bouquet and Sharkey’s for the use of their facility, said Bunny Peterson rodeo spokesperson.
The Douglas High School Rodeo is being held this weekend at the Pinenut Arena.
