Douglas bowlers finish fourth
The Douglas Bowling Club wound up its first season with a fourth-place finish in the High Desert Interscholastic Bowling Program playoffs.
Douglas, with a team comprised of Douglas High and ASPIRE Academy students, lost its HDIBP Mountain championship match last Thursday against Reed 37-8 and then fell short on Tuesday in a 29-16 loss against Spanish Springs in the consolation final of the playoffs. Spanish Springs had lost to Carson 25-20 in the Valley Division championship match.
The Douglas team finished its season with a 5-5 overall record. After losing its first three matches, the team bounced back to win five in a row to reach the division playoff finals.
And this came from a lineup that had very little previous experience in terms of competitive bowling.
“We ended up the season fourth in the league out of 12 teams,” Douglas coach David Dickey noted. “When you consider nine out our 14 bowlers had never bowled before, it has been a very successful season.”
Dickey added that Dale McDonald and Jessica Withrow received scholarships for earning spots on the all-star team.
“I am very proud of our team and very happy with the season,” Dickey said. “There were doubts whether we would competitive for a few years and maybe not even win a match (this season), but we were the very first first-year team in the 15 years of the HDIBP to ever compete for a division championship.”
