Devil Pups are recruiting early for summer event

Early recruiting for the 2001 Devil Pups Youth Program is under way. Youths 14 through 17 years of age are invited to call for an interview.

This year’s Devil Pups encampment was very successful. Thirteen of the 14 candidates who attended completed the course. Chris Boeche of Carson City left the mini boot camp because of leg cramps.

The following young people of Northern Nevada graduated as Devil Pups on Aug. 3 at Marine Corps Base Camp, Pendleton, Calif., and received a physical fitness and a citizenship award: Nick Ezell of Minden, Jeremy Garcia of Gardnerville, Dereck Weaver of Genoa, Jon Trent of Wellington, Chris Reitzig and Bridget Jiminez of Carson City, Andrew Baldwin of Fallon, Zeb Jensen and Anthony Scialabba of Lund, Damien Lang of Reno, Brian Richards of Sparks, Eamonn Donnelly of Imlay and Jess Bennett of Winnemucca.

Zeb Jensen received an Honor Man award for having the highest physical fitness score in his platoon. Phillip Chrystal of Reno and Joe Masini of Ely, both Devil Pups from previous years, worked as drill instructor assistants this year and both performed outstandingly, a spokesman said.

Transportation was provided by the commanding officers of NAS Fallon and Marine Corps Mountain Warfare Training Center of Bridgeport, Calif. The program is accomplished with no expense to the government.

This year’s encampment was made possible thanks to the donations of the following individuals, organizations and companies: Battle Borne, High Desert, Silver State Detachments of the Marine Corps League, Department of Nevada Marine Corps League, Silver State Detachment Auxiliary, Gallagher Livestock, Steve Wrenn, Bill Camfield, Gysgt Gene Ewing, Bonny Woodger, Neil Lininger, Scott Rogers and one anonymous donor.

Brian Southerland and Joe Hennessy hosted a fund-raising horse shoe tournament for Devil Pups. Denton Gubler of Lund, Maria Mendosa of Winnemucca, Tim Whitaker of Unionville and Bob Roach of Fallon served as recruiters and screeners.

Major George Class USMC (Ret) is the Devil Pups liaison officer for Northern Nevada, assisted by 1stSgt Bob Roach USMC (Ret).
