Denny ‘Otto’ Heitman Jr.
A celebration of life is 1 p.m. Saturday in the Orovada Community Center for fourth-generation Nevadan and Carson Valley native Denny “Otto” Heitman Jr., 63, who died Jan. 6, 2011, in Orovada.
Born Feb. 13, 1947, to Jere and Dennis Heitman, he participated in 4-H as a youth. He produced the grand champion calf at the Tri-County Fair when he was 15. In 1963, the family moved to Orovada and he attended Humboldt County High School where he participated in football and basketball.
He was on the state champion football team. He was honored with a Dean’s Award while attending the University of Nevada Agriculture program where he received a two year agricultural degree. He served in the National Guard for six years.
Mr. Heitman returned home to Willow Creek Ranch in Orovada, continuing his career in ranching and starting his family. He started Heitman Exploration in 1983 successfully working to establish his company eventually branching into mining and construction while residing at Cane Springs.
He was always a cowboy, winning an event at the Ranchhand Rodeo in 1992. He was widely respected and admired as a cat skinner, cattle hauler and joke teller.
Mr. Heitman was preceded in death by his mother.
He is survived by his father Dennis Heitman Sr.; children Paige (Tige) Brown, Ann Heitman, Dustin (Sarah) Heitman and Teo Maestrejuan; siblings Lana (Jeff) Servatius, Margie (Rob) Wonhof; cousins Bob (Marlene) Fettic, Jody (Jim) Copenhaver and Jeanne Fettic; grandchildren Trevor, Hannah, Ty and Jalee.
