Man who allegedly shot mother dies at hospital
The names of the two Douglas County deputies who responded to the Manhattan Way shooting on Oct. 13 have been released.
Sgt. Bernadette Smith and Deputy Jeff Johnsen were the deputies involved in shooting and injuring Jarek Kozlowski around 1:24 a.m.
Smith is a 17-year veteran while Johnsen had worked for the sheriff’s office for a decade.
Both deputies are on paid administrative leave while the Carson City Sheriff’s Office conducts an investigation into the shooting.
Jarek Kozlowski, 28, died Friday night of respiratory failure at Renown Regional Medical Center.
His death was not related to the gunshot wounds he sustained in a shootout with the two deputies who responded to his Manhattan Way address, said Sheriff’s spokesman Sgt. Pat Brooks.
According to the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office, Jarek was the chief suspect in the shooting death of his mother, 50-year-old Michelle Kozlowski.
Deputies responded to the Manhattan Way address after receiving a report of shots fired at the Gardnerville Ranchos address to find Michelle shot to death in the street.
Jarek was in taken to the hospital the morning of Oct. 13 and had been there since.
