Clinic billing manager admits theft
On her first day back from a cruise, a Carson City billing manager was confronted by her coworkers over the theft of at least $40,000 from the clinic where they worked.
Cindy Lou Katzenberger, 58, pleaded guilty to felony embezzlement on Tuesday.
In exchange for her plea, prosecutors won’t object to her receiving a suspended sentence.
Katzenberger’s attorney said they contend the amount taken was closer to $40,000. The prosecution is claiming it could be more.
Katzenberger worked for Tahoe Fracture Clinic. According to court documents she kept cash that patients paid, and doctored the books to cover up the theft.
According to investigator’s information, Katzenberger would call patients and offer to take a cash payment for what they owed.
Insurance made up much of the loss to the clinic.
While prosecutors are recommending she receive a suspended sentence, Katzenberger could receive 1-5 years in prison and a $10,000 fine.
She is free on her own recognizance. Her sentencing was set for Sept. 2. Prosecutors asked for two hours to present evidence regarding the amount of restitution.
