Accused hotboxers end Sunday drive in hoosegow

Two men, who were allegedly witnessed enjoying a marijuana cigarette during a Sunday afternoon drive down Highway 395, were taken into custody after a traffic stop in Minden.

A passenger in another vehicle reported smelling marijuana while stopped at the Topsy Lane light. When he looked around, he spotted a gold Jeep with two men passing a marijuana cigarette back and forth at about 3 p.m.

After reporting the incident the motorist followed the Jeep south on Highway 395 as deputies responded north. A deputy pulled the vehicle over at the Ironwood Center and contacted the driver, who allegedly admitted smoking marijuana while behind the wheel, which is known as hotboxing. Deputies also found an open beer in the vehicle.

The driver was taken into custody after failing a field sobriety test and faces a misdemeanor charge of driving under the influence.

A passenger in the vehicle, identified as Manuel L. Lopez, 27, was arrested on warrants out of Carson City and Reno.

According to the sheriff’s office, Lopez was wanted for possession of stolen property in Reno and domestic battery and failure to appear in Carson City.

He also faces a charge of smoking marijuana while in a moving vehicle.
