Coleville students to be in Mathcounts competition

Staff reports

What is the 50th letter in this pattern: ABCAABBCCAAABBBCCC? Some of Mono County’s seventh and eighth grade “Mathletes” can give the correct answer in seconds – even before the judge has finished reading the problem.

In an effort to promote math excellence for Mono students, the Mono County Office of Education, under the direction of Richard McAteer, is sponsoring a County-wide Mathcounts competition. The event will be held at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 31, at Bridgeport Elementary School.

Mathcounts is for 7th and 8th grade student teams who are registered to compete in the Regional Mathcounts competition.

The Mono County Office of Education will award the first place team a trophy and $1,000 to assist the team with expenses at the regional competition. In addition, all students will receive medals and certificates.

The public is invited to attend the countdown round of competition at 1 p.m.

Three teams will compete in the first Mono County Mathcounts: Bridgeport Elementary School, Edna Beaman Elementary School and Antelope Valley Schools.

“Students have been diligent in their efforts to improve their math skills and are looking forward to this competition,” said McAteer.
