Below-zero temperatures are expected New Year’s Eve at Lake Tahoe and in Carson Valley as a cold storm system is expected to arrive Tuesday.

While the forecast for the possibility of snow is a little shaky, National Weather Service meteorologists are predicting strong northeast winds Tuesday through Wednesday with 40 mph gusts around Lake Tahoe.

With the wind chill, temperatures of below -10 could occur at Lake Tahoe in time for the annual New Year’s Eve celebration at Stateline.

Temperatures in Carson Valley could dip slightly below 0 overnight on Wednesday.

Anyone outside for New Year’s Eve celebrations should dress in layers to keep warm.

Forecasters say the best chance of snow starting late Monday night is along Highway 395 from Reno south to Bridgeport.

A little wind might be a good thing for the Western Nevada valleys where air quality has reached unhealthful levels.

Stagnant conditions and cold weather has increased the effect of wood smoke on the air quality. The Washoe County Health District has changed its burn code from green to red, prohibiting the use of woodstoves there.

The air quality monitor in Ranchos Aspen Park showed the air was unhealthy for sensitive groups early Sunday morning, and then clear for most of the day.
