Cards and letters wanted for ill boy
A former Carson Valley resident and her family are asking that notes and cards be sent to their 11-year-old son in New York who recently was diagnosed with leukemia.
Joseph and Cynthia Lamon Fernandez are seeking the get-well wishes on behalf of their son Richard who was diagnosed with leukemia on Jan. 13.
“For the past three weeks, Richard has been struck down with infection after infection as a result of a low immune system from the chemotherapy,” wrote his mother and father. “Richard has shown improvement and his lab work is coming back with better results day by day. But Richard is still considered to be in critical condition. He will continue to receive chemotherapy when he is out of ICU.”
He is currently in the pediatric intensive care unit at North Shore University Hospital in New York.
The Valley Stream, N.Y., Fire Department has established a fund to help the family pay medical expenses. People are asked to send cards and letters to Richard and his family at: Nassau Hose Company No. 1, for the benefit of (FBO) Richard Fernandez, PO Box 302, Valley Stream, NY 11582.
Richard’s mother, Cynthia Lamon Fernandez, graduated from Douglas High School in 1981. Her parents are Carl and Addie Lamon of Carson City.
