Candlelight walk and vigil planned to create awareness of domestic violence

A candlelight walk and vigil to promote the end to domestic violence in Douglas County through awareness, advocacy and action will be held on Oct. 5.

The walk will begin at the Lampe Park pavilion at 7 p.m. and end at the Family Support Council of Douglas County’s parking lot on Waterloo Lane in Gardnerville.

The event is being called “Day of Unity,” and is being coordinated by the Soroptimist International of Carson Valley and the Family Support Council to help educate victims, abusers and the general public on the seriousness of domestic violence.

Keynote speaker is Nevada Attorney General Frankie Sue Del Papa, a long-time supporter of programs to reduce domestic violence.

Other speakers include Sheriff Ron Pierini, and victim of domestic violence will speak on her experiences. Other dignitaries will be on schedule.

T-shirts commemorating the event will be sold for $10 each. For more information, call Liz Bricker, 265-3539.
