State school boards honor editor
Record-Courier Editor Kurt Hildebrand received the Nevada Association of School Boards award for print reporting.
Hildebrand was nominated last summer and the award was announced last week.
“The Record-Courier covers everything from positive news to the hard-to-cover issues that are sometimes presented within a district,” according to the nomination letter. “He works closely with the Douglas County School District to be present at not only fun school events, but also meetings that sometimes can be controversial, to ensure that the community is kept well-informed on important issues. His honest presentation of facts whether it be related to the happening amongst the students, families, district staff administrators or the Board of Trustees is exemplary.”
Hildebrand covered his first Douglas County School Board meeting in September 1989 in a story about a year-round multi-track calendar at Scarselli Elementary proposed for the following year. That same Sept. 14 edition contained a photo taken by Hildebrand of Robb and Don Hellwinkel donating a 1990 Geo to the district to revive the drivers education program.
Hildebrand was named Nevada Outstanding Journalist in 1994 and has been editor of The Record-Courier since May 2004.
He lives on the former Sierra Creek Ranch in Genoa with spouse, Jennifer Hollister.
