R-C staff writer named journalist of merit
Staff writer Sarah Hauck was named community journalist of merit for 2014-15 by the Nevada Press Association at their annual banquet on Friday.
Hauck has worked for The Record-Courier since June 2014 and has specialized in entertainment writing, which won her a first place in this year’s Better Newspaper Contest.
The Record-Courier competes with other large weeklies and small dailies across the state.
The newspaper’s staff won the association’s award for freedom of the press, best overall design, best website and best online writing for the R-C Running Commentary.
This is the sixth year in a row the daily news blog has won the first-place award.
Veteran R-C Sports Editor Dave Price won first place for best sports feature, and photographer Jim Grant won first place for best sports photo.
Hauck took second place for best news feature. Reporter Caryn Haller won second place for best feature story. Grant took second place for best portrait.
The Carson Valley Almanac took second place for best special section or campaign. The Record-Courtier took third place for advertising general excellence. Editor Kurt Hildebrand won third place for best editorial writing, and Price won a third place for best business news story on his coverage of Sharkey’s opening.
The banquet was held at the Sparks Nugget.
The Record-Courier is one of several publications owned by Swift Communications, which include the Nevada Appeal, Lahontan Valley News, North Lake Tahoe Bonanza, Tahoe Daily Tribune, Sierra Sun and the Northern Nevada Business Weekly.
