Issues conference tackles economic indicators

Staff Reports

Master of Ceremonies for the Critical Issues Conference, Sam Shad, speaks about his recent trip to Washington D.C. last year in Minden.

The Business Council of Douglas County's Hallmark event of the year, the annual Critical Issues Conference will convene 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sept. 29.

Each year the event attracts hundreds of Northern Nevada's top thought leaders in the worlds of business, politics and media. This year's agenda is highlighted by a keynote address from economist Mr. Jim Rounds who will present an analysis of Nevada's current economic data and discuss what the indicators for Nevada and Douglas County are in the coming years. How many new jobs if any? How many new businesses? Will housing be needed? Will Douglas be affected by Northern Nevada growth and if so, how much and when? Jim has delivered hundreds of economic presentations and is regularly quoted on television, radio, and in printed media and will bring his focused analysis to the top leaders attending giving them a roadmap of 2017 and beyond.

Lance Gilman, principal and director of the Tahoe-Reno Industrial Center, last year shared the massive changes coming to Northern Nevada. This year he will give a full update on the progress on those projects as well as details on new things coming that are not even on your radar.

Most likely they will affect how business moves forward. We will also hear from local owners and why they are here.

The conference will also feature Mike Pegram, businessman with many endeavors including owner of Carson Valley Inn, Bodines and Sharkey's. Attendees will be part of a candid conversation about Mr. Pegram's investment in the area and possible plans for the future. One of the most successful businessmen in the community will share what you have always wanted to ask.

Rounding out the speaker roster, Douglas County Manager Larry Werner will share his thoughts on how the county will handle the pivotal changes coming, how county services will handle the coming years, all while respecting the rural character of the community. During this session, a live digital poll will be conducted and all attendees will participate on their smart phones with real time results to real time questions and challenges facing the community. The 20-year master plan survey that was conducted all summer has concluded and during this session, the results will be unveiled.
