Philadelphia Restaurant & Sandwich Company has gone out on the road to extend service beyond its location in the Gardnerville Ranchos.

Michael Fayer, who opened a restaurant that specializes in Italian American cooking, sandwiches and catering on May 8, 2013, said delivery service is now available from 4:30-9 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday.

“Since I opened here, some people have said, ‘You need to deliver’ and now we are,” the owner said.

Delivery for $20 minimum orders began in November and is available to residents of Foothill Road south to the California state line, as well as the Town of Minden, Gardnerville, the Ranchos and Ruhenstroth.

With the recent closing of Saletti’s Restaurant in Minden, it isn’t easy to find a restaurant in Gardnerville or Minden that is dedicated to Italian cuisine.

“I wanted to expand,” Fayer said. “Other than pizza, I think we’re the only Italian food left in town, so I wanted to go after that market.”

There have been other additions, including a website that lists a menu and other information. Fayer also opened a second restaurant, Asiago’s Pizzeria & Deli (Italian and Greek cuisine) in June 2015 at Stateline.

You might say Fayer has worked to continue a tradition that he grew up with in Philadelphia. His father started cooking cheese steaks in a North Philadelphia deli in 1962.

“There is an Italian tradition in Philadelphia,” Fayer said. “I mean, Italian families that have been there for 100 years. You have an Italian restaurant on every corner and there’s lots of seafood. That’s the tradition I’m trying to keep going.”

The menu lists a range from salads to shrimp scampi to The Philadelphia Cheese Steak. Entrees like Chicken Marsala or Chicken Broccoli Alfredo are made from scratch when they are ordered, according to the website.

Is there a signature item on the Philadelphia Restaurant & Sandwich Company menu?

“A lot of people have seen our sign and just think we’re a cheesesteak shop, but I think our signature is Italian American and seafood,” Fayer said.

He is quick to point out this is a team operation that features two chefs, Joel Gruneich and Dustin Hull. Gruneich, who doubles as general manager, is an experienced chef known around the region as guitarist and songwriter for the band Lavish Green. Hull recently came on board after previously serving as a chef at Evan’s American Gourmet Cafe in South Lake Tahoe.

“I couldn’t do it without my staff,” Fayer said. “Dustin and Joel, they’re definitely stars in my kitchen. Each one of them has more than a decade of experience under his belt.”
