The Veterans of Foreign Wars and Ladies Auxiliary 8583 and 3630 Topaz recently honored the winners of the annual Voice of Democracy contest.
The winners will be judged at the District 3 level, and that winner goes to state. The state winner goes on to national judging.
First place was Holly Hamperle, second, Sarah Petite, both of Douglas High School; third, Brian Solari and fourth, Melissa Van Dusen with the ROTC at Incline High School.
The winners were given certificates and money from the posts and auxiliaries. National awards are a minimum of $1,000 and the maximum of $20,000.
Middle schools may enter the VFW Youth Essay contest. Teachers have information regarding the program. Essays need to be turned in by March 15, 1998. National winner receives $5,000.
