Autumn festival in Alpine County offers variety of events

Staff reports

This year, to help celebrate fall, the Alpine County Arts Commission and the Alpine County Chamber of Commerce plus several countywide organizations are joining together for AutumnFest, a celebration of color and activities. AutumnFest began Sept. 15 and runs until Oct. 17 and takes place throughout Alpine County.

“The first and foremost event, which takes place all month long and throughout the county, is the change of color. The warm yellows, outrageous oranges and radiant reds are some of the best fall colors you’ll see in California,” said Bob Anderson of the Alpine County Chamber of Commerce. “A map is available to take you and your family to a wide variety of all venues.”

Kirkwood Ski Resort joins in the celebration on Saturday, Sept. 30, with the Music in the Alps and Beer Fest featuring the Lazy Eights. In addition to the music and food, an art exhibit with a fall theme will be in the Mountain Club, sponsored by Kirkwood and the Arts Commission.

An old-time country fair will be the theme on Saturday, Oct. 7, in downtown Markleeville. The Alpine County Chamber of Commerce and the Arts Commission join together to present the Alpine Country Fair from noon to 6 p.m. The Black Irish Band, specializing in folk songs and Sierra ballads, will be the featured entertainment. There will be food, libations, arts and crafts, children’s activities, belly dancers, music and the Virginia City Gunfighters and Saloon Girls performing throughout the day.

A wide range of workshops are being offered by Kit Carson Lodge and Sorensen’s Resort. Kit Carson Lodge will present “Fly Fishing with Chris Shutes” and Sorensen’s will offer “Trailing the Immigrants,” “Washoe Weaving” and “Discovering Feathered Friends,” as well as a wildflower hike and a photo workshop. For more information regarding these workshops, contact Kit Carson Lodge at (209) 258-8500 or Sorensen’s at (800) 423-9949.
