June 2, 1893

Over twenty young Germans arrived in the valley last week, including a number of girls. Most of the new arrivals have relatives here, where they will reside until they learn to speak the language.

May 31, 1918

This evening at the Douglas County High School the Commencement exercises will be held. Walter A. Clark, president of the University of Nevada, will be the principal speaker.

80 years ago

June 2, 1933

Voters of Douglas County went to the mass meetings held last Saturday morning and voted unanimously in favor of repealing the Eighteenth amendment to the Constitution of the United States, by selecting thirty-six delegates to the county convention that have avowed themselves as supporters f the repeal movement.

May 30, 1963

Graduation ceremonies for the 1963 class of Douglas County High School will be held this Friday evening, with Lt. Gov. Paul Laxalt presenting the commencement address.

When not at the helm of his sailboat, Shawn Smyth can be found steering a most lucrative, ever-expanding Carson Valley Inn. The hotel-casino general manager can boast that in five short years he helped launch a restaurant expansion, a larger casino and a 60-lot RV park.

There were a lot of big laughs, even bigger swings, good-natured insults and just plain old-fashioned fun being had by Douglas High’s American Legion team and past DHS graduates Saturday afternoon at Tiger Field. The alumni, coached by Hal Wheeler, served up a 13-12 win on their younger counterparts, rallying in the eighth and ninth inning for the triumph.
